Sonographic Clinical Assessment of the Newborn (SCAN) workshop

December 7-8, 2019

Conducted by: University of Calgary, SCAN program faculty in collaboration with the Division of Neonatology, Dept of Pediatrics, PGIMER, Chandigarh, India

Workshop summary: This is a simulation based workshop where state of the art neonatal simulators (phantoms and virtual reality technology) will be used.

Simulation based education and training has potential advantages of learning in a safe environment. This learning includes routine and advanced management of sick neonate and various skills training such as placing central venous lines and peripheral arterial lines. This workshop will focus on imparting hands-on training to the participants in performing cardiac ultrasound to diagnose cardiac dysfunction, lung ultrasound to diagnose pulmonary air leaks and preterm respiratory distress syndrome, ultrasound technique for confirming line placement, Endotracheal tube insertion and other skilled procedures. As this training does not involve real subjects and done on manikins and phantoms, participants can learn in a safe and fear free environment to sharpen their skills and this would eventually help in a better bed side management of sick neonates.
