About the Advanced Pediatric Centre

The Newborn Unit is located in the Nehru Hospital building of PGIMER, but administratively it is under the Department of Pediatrics which is housed in the Advanced Pediatric Centre.

The Advanced Pediatric Centre was the first amongst the many specialised centres that came up in the campus of PGIMER. The centre was conceived by Prof BNS Walia, and it was his vision and dynamism that made this centre a reality.

The concept and vision of the Advanced Pediatric Centre were based on the objective that it should provide not only high quality state-of-the-art specialized Pediatric care to children affected by serious diseases, but also provide models of community-based health services to the rural poor. This apex multi-specialty centre is one of its kind in the country.

The 300-bedded Advanced Pediatric Centre sanctioned exclusively for the care of children was set up with the following objectives:

1. To provide high quality treatment for complex and serious diseases affecting children.

2. To train pediatricians in super specialties of Pediatrics.

3. To conduct research in diseases and problems prevalent in developing countries of tropical region.

4. To establish models of delivery of health care in the community and to work for and support the national programmes related to child survival in the community.

The Centre has the Department of Pediatrics with its sub-specialties and the Department of Pediatric Surgery, as its main constituents. The Department of Pediatrics has sub-specialties of Neonatology, Pediatric Intensive Care, Allergy & Clinical Immunology, Pediatric Pulmonology, Hematology and Oncology, Neuro Development, Clinical Genetics, Anthropology, Child Psychology and Community Pediatrics.

Hematology, Biochemistry and Radiology services are available in the APC. Many routine and sophisticated investigations are now provided under one roof. Many specialised research laboratories, such as those of Genetics, Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Hematology find a pride of place in this building. The centre also has facilities for lung function testing and bronchoscopy. Every year, more than 5000 blood transfusions are administered to children with thalassemia with the help of a voluntary organization run by parents of thalassemic children.
